Sande moved to Nashville from Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 2002. She loves the diversity and vibrancy of living in a larger city. Professionally, she works as a personal coach, offering leadership and education programs to help people grow in work and in their lives overall. For Sande, the Democratic Party fits with her own priorities of creating justice and opportunity for all.
First Political Memory
My first political memory is arguing with my conservative father in the 10th grade...1961. I was at boarding school learning how to think for myself amidst the early flush of integration/segregation upheaval in Memphis, Tennessee. Learning to differentiate from a strongly conservative and Republican father taught me how important having a party that stood up for human rights was.
Guiding Principles
We are a strong country in so far as we take care of the ones who cannot speak for themselves against power.
We must ask ourselves to be our absolute best in terms of caring for the future.
Motto
Destiny is a matter of choice not chance.
Heroes
Hubert Humphrey and Martin Luther King, Jr.
Why She is a Democrat
Because, in this age of partisanship and denial, the Democratic Party comes to the rescue of those who cannot speak for themselves more often, and at its best, stands for growth toward justice, individuality, and collectivity.
How She Got Involved
In High School in Memphis during the civil rights period, I became involved in several education integration events. I also was involved with our speakers bureau and had to represent key speakers, e.g., John Kenneth Gailbraith, William F. Buckley, William L. Shirer, Robert Frost, etc., to the press. That work grew my appreciation for the role of intelligence and learning as a force in politics.
