Matia called Trenton, Tennessee home until she was 18 and began working toward her degree in Business Administration at Middle Tennessee State University. She now works in Nashville as an account manager for a local web development firm. She also spends her time working for Democratic causes, as a leader in the local Young Democrats. For Matia, it's not enough to be young and have ideals, you have to put that energy and idealism to work.
First Political Memory
One of my first political memories occurred in 4th grade when me and a few other students were selected to attend a George Bush, Sr. rally. A group of friends and I gained access to the front stage by pushing our way through the crowd and announcing we were grandchildren of President Bush. The rally was my first glimpse into the passion and purpose of politics.
Guiding Principles
It is my goal to change at least one life for the better every day.
Heroes
My hero is my mother. She is not a legendary lawmaker; she takes a more grassroots approach. My mom administers insulin shots and monitors blood pressure for those in her community with limited healthcare, and she lends money to those who struggle financially because minimum wage does not cover monthly expenses. She lives her life as any good Democrat or human being should.
Why She is a Democrat
I believed in a party that recognizes that everyone is not rich and everyone does NOT believe all men are created equally. I stand behind a party that acknowledges increased intensity and frequency of hurricanes and other extreme weather events are not just random acts of nature and people are dying because of their lack of health insurance. The Democrat party affirms all these ideas, and it governs accordingly.
How She Got Involved
I realized to truly make a difference you must reach beyond voting. Whether it is dispensing campaign stickers for your favorite candidate, writing your legislators to support or oppose a bill or encourage your peers to vote, make a personal investment in the political process.
